Martin Olsen:
Mr. Olsen has an in depth knowledge of the city and the political history. New
London needs the type of background that Mr. Olsen has experienced in order to
keep from repeating the errors of the past. No other candidate has the
experience and practical background that is needed on the next New London City
Council
Michael Tranchida:
Mr. Tranchida will hit the ground running as a former city clerk, he has been
present at more city council meetings than most other people in the community.
Mr. Tranchida will be a natural blend with Mr. Olsen as they combine their vast
knowledge of New London, the workings of the city from the inside to ensure that
New London moves in the right direction while avoiding errors of the
past.
Marie Friess-McSparran:
Ms. Friess-McSparran has demonstrated her commitment to the people of the city
rather than to any special interest groups. Ms. Friess-McSparran has been
through the gauntlet and no matter what the attacks she has stood by the people
to do what is right for New London. It is clear from stated positions that she
puts in the time to research an issue in great detail prior to making a
decision. This is what an elected representative of the people should be
doing.
Michael Passero:
Michael Passero has served honorably and soundly despite attacks that he is a city
employee and should not be on the council. My only concern is that he failed to
correct blatant errors with the charter either by charter revision or by
ordinance. As a councilor rather than council president Mr. Passero has clearly
made it as one of the seven picks when choosing the next council.
Keith Robbins:
Keith Robbins is a seasoned municipal leader with knowledge and contacts outside of
New London that will be of great benefit to the city. New London is not an
island and the mindset that New London sets the stage has not served the
community well in the last fifty years. Mr. Robbins will blend his experience
and knowledge with the other council members to move New London forward as a
partner with the rest of the municipalities in New London county and
southeastern Connecticut.
Bill Vogel:
Bill Vogel has the leadership and command experience to accomplish what needs to be
done to move New London forward. As a former US Navy submarine captain Mr. Vogel
has proven that he is a cut above. The leadership and managerial skills
developed must be time proven as a prerequisite to taking command of a nuclear
submarine. Mr. Vogel will be the “get the job done guy” on the new city council.
New London needs to move away from the rhetoric of visions and ideas and move
towards accomplishments and implementation in order to succeed. Bill Vogel has
the skills needed to implement and accomplish.
Katelin Teel:
Katelin Teel is a new face to politics in New London. Ms. Teel has been very vocal about
finances and budget issues. She has demonstrated that she can sift through the
fluff and deception that comes about during the budget season. Much of the
responsibility of the city council is centered on the fiscal makeup of the city,
approving a budget and allocation of funding is the control of the purse strings
and the control of the city. The budgetary skills that Ms. Teel brings to the
table will round out the above listed candidates and put New London on a steady
course to prosperity.
The field is large but it is not a field of significant quality, therefore picking
seven good candidates was not very difficult since weeding out of candidates was
easy. The people of New London decide the future of the city.
More than ever this election season it is imperative that the correct council be
seated. These seven candidates represent a council that will work together to
move New London along and avoid the ills of the past. These seven candidates as
endorsed blend knowledge and experience from the past with commitment, skills
and concern for the people of New London rather than blind support or allegiance
to the administration or special interest groups.
The role of the city council is to act as the legislative arm of government. The
city council sets policy for the administration to implement not the other way
around. This process acts as a system of check and balance in government. In
choosing these seven candidates a primary driver was to look at candidates and
see if they even understood the role that they were seeking. Some candidates
were clearly eliminated as endorsable because of their statements about the
role of the council; they simply did not understand the process and job
responsibilities of the position they were seeking. Others were just not the
right fit to seating a city council that will work together for and with the
people of New London. The city council members are a voice of the people of New
London, not a voice of the administration or special interest
group.
